correcting for SSA membership, and without regard to distance flown.
Hopefully we can improve this situation in the 2007 season.

I'm a little surprised there hasn't been more publicity for the
international OLC league results. Nothing's better at making Americans
take interest in an obscure sport, than the prospect of seeing a bunch
of foreigners get whooped but good. USA! USA!

Here is the IGC Press release:
September 12, 2006
Press Release IGC-OLC World League 2006
The first Season of the IGC-OLC World League has been succesfuly
accomplished. Despite the bad weather in Europe in spring and August,
all participating Clubs of the 10 National Leagues managed to score
during all 19 rounds, between 29th April and 3rd September 2006.
The IGC-OLC World League is an multi-national decentralized soaring
competition sanctioned by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale
(FAI) that runs in conjunction with the Aerokurier Online-Contest for
19 consecutive weekends during the Northern Summer season. Club members
flying from their Club's home airfield on the competition weekend days
are scored on an optimized 2.5 hour sprint task, all in gliding flight,
with the finish altitude no lower than the start. The longest
cross-country distance flown in 2.5 hours is handicapped by the
glider's performance index to generate a handicapped average speed. The
top three club member's speeds are added to get the club's speed score
for the weekend round. Each club is ranked by total speed in their home
country, then the top 5 clubs from each country are entered in the
international scoring for that round. Scoring is similar to
Formula-One, with each higher finishing position worth one additional
point for the round. Scoring is totaled at the end of the season to
declare the overall winner.
(Explanation Courtesy of Doug Haluza SSA-OLC Administrator )
We are honored to declare the winning local Clubs/Teams 2006 (total
scoring after round 19/ Final Score):
  	Points Club Speed (km/h)

2 211 Warner Springs Gliders (US) 4. 052,85
3 153 Soar Truckee (US) 2. 935,56
4 150 TSA-Texas Soaring As (US) 3. 034,75
5 131 Black Forest Soaring (US) 2.959,18
5 131 SFZ Königsdorf (DE) 2. 488,18
7 120 SFG Giulini/Ludwigsh (DE) 2.715,91
8 117 FSG Öhringen (DE) 2. 234,79

Congratulations to the USA/SSA gliding clubs for winning the first 5
places.
During this first season, the following number of clubs qualified for
the IGC-OLC World League:
22 US clubs, out of 72 clubs
27 German Clubs, out of 31 clubs Premier League + 498 clubs secondary
league
15 Italian clubs, out of 18 clubs
14 Swiss clubs, out of 33 clubs
16 Canadian clubs, out of 17 clubs
18 Netherland Clubs, out of 27 clubs
13 Finish Clubs, out of 18 clubs
30 Czech/Slovakian Clubs, out of 56 clubs
7 French Clubs, out of 7 clubs
16 Austrian Clubs, out of 23 clubs
>>> A total number of 800 local clubs competed in this season!
Detailed scores of each round inclusive links to all flights can be
found on www.fai.org/gliding/olc on the FAI-Gliding site and through a
link on the OLC server www.onlinecontest.org .
We hope, that this first worldwide Club League encourages additional
Clubs from other countries to take part next year. Additional National
Leagues can be created, by contacting the administrator of the OLC or
the FAI-Gliding OLC Specialist.

The number of German clubs qualified to qualify for the IGC-OLC World
League was only 31. The 498 clubs form the secondary league were not
scored in the IGC-OLC World League, even when they were faster than the
fifth of the German Premier League.
So that number of clubs participating in the IGC-OLC World League was
not the 800 clubs claimed by the FAI-Gliding Specialist but only 302 clubs.

I agree that this would make a great story - both nationally and in the
hometown of the regional winners. As a volunteer publicity chair for
the SSA, I will work to gain national coverage.
We need volunteers in each region to get out press releases for their
regional winner. I will create a press release if a volunteer will
collect the specific information. Please contact me for the details.
The SSA site has more information. THE SOARING PUBLICITY HANDBOOK is
located at the botton of the page in the Development Section.
http://www.ssa.org/development/development.asp
OLC is a great opportunity to gain public attention for our sport.
Please volunteer.
